Application Requirements

Applicants should have a B.S. degree in Engineering, Life Science, or Physical Science.

Prerequisites [Top of Page]

It is entirely the applicant's responsibility to ascertain that the required prerequisites accompanying the selected field listed on the Prerequisite Sheet have been fulfilled prior to starting coursework. The Department does not take responsibility for an applicant's defiiciency in meeting prerequisites nor for underachieving in the core and/or elective courses listed in the Study Plan or for underachieving in the MS Comprehensive or PhD Preliminary Examination due to lack or neglect of fulfilling prerequisites. Please Note: Applicants needing to complete prerequiste courses while at UCLA or during UCLA Summer Sessions are advised to enroll in these courses on a Pass/Not Pass (P/N), or, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grading basis which will not affect the overall GPA while a graduate student at UCLA. Prerequisite courses cannot be taken concurrently with graduate courses while a student in the BME program.

Applicants can access the Prerequisite Sheet at the following URL: http://www.bme.ucla.edu/admissions/PrerequisitesInformation.pdf

Grade Point Average [Top of Page]

To apply for the M.S. or PhD degree, applicants should have a B.S. degree in Engineering, Life Science, or Physical Science, with a grade point average (GPA) of not less than 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate study. Applicants who already have the M.S. degree or will obtain the degree before enrolling, should have an overall GPA of at least 3.25 for the M.S., however, such applicants must still report their undergraduate GPA. Meeting the above minimum requirements does not guarantee admission; the actual standard for admission is set by the current pool of applicants, and is generally much higher.

How to calculate JR/SR year GPA:
Jr & Sr Year GPA (Grade Point Average)
Junior and Senior Year units are the last 60 semester units, or last 90 quarter units, completed in undergraduate status. Your Jr/Sr GPA should be calculated using a four point system (i.e., A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1). Ignore pluses and minuses, unless the grade points are clearly stated on the transcript. See sample calculation to follow.

If your school uses another system, and it cannot be converted to a four point GPA, leave the GPA boxes blank. This applies in particular to most international institutions.

For applicants who are in the process of completing the senior year and are unable to calculate the GPA for the first quarter or first semester because grades have not yet been posted, please calculate your GPA from the junior (3rd year) only, i.e., last 30 semester units or last 45 quarter units.

HOW TO CALCULATE GPA IN THE MAJOR COURSES

In addition to your JR/SR GPA required on the Department Application (PDF Version / WORD Version) is the GPA in the major courses overall. Using the above sample, calculate your GPA in all science, mathematics, and engineering courses for all four years of your undergraduate studies. Do not include grades from fields other than the ones listed above.

Transcripts [Top of Page]

Unless you received or will be receiving your bachelor and/or master degree from UCLA, please submit two official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Transcripts of applicants who received or will be receiving the bachelor and/or master degree from UCLA will be retrieved internally in your behalf. International students, please submit two official transcripts, degree certificates and/or diplomas. All documents must bear the actual seal and/or signature of the Registrar. Photocopies are not accepted. Do not send the original of an academic record that cannot be replaced; obtain a properly certified copy instead.

Important: It is highly recommended that applicants follow-up with each college and/or university where the applicant has attended to ascertain that the official transcript(s) has been sent to the Department of Bioengineering in ample time to permit receipt in the department by our December 15th deadline. The Department address to send the transcripts is located on the "When and How to Apply" page.
Please keep checking the Status Screen to verify that the transcripts have been received in the Department.

ATTENTION APPLICANTS FROM INDIA! Please do not send transcripts from Secondary or Higher Secondary schools. Also, please do not send in Certificates of Appreciation or any other type of Certificates.

Statement Of Purpose [Top of Page]

This statement should be precise and brief. It should specify the research area you are interested in. Your statement is a means of helping us match your academic and research interest with those of our faculty (this is very important if you are applying for financial support). It should not be a personal life history; it should contain only such personal details that will aid the Admissions Committee in evaluating your application.

Describe exactly what you wish to study at UCLA. "Biomedical Engineering", for example is not specific enough. State what branch of Biomedical Engineering interests you, e.g., biomedical signal & image processing and Informatics, bioacoustics, speech and hearing, biocybernetics, neuroengineering, etc.

IMPORTANT: You can now submit your Statement of Purpose instantly which is the preferred way to submit it given our December 15th deadline. You submit your personal statement through the on-line Graduate Admissions Application via the Departmental Supplement. Through the on-line Departmental Supplement, applicants complete the Statement of Purpose which is instantly downloaded to the department upon completing and submitting the on-line Graduate Admissions application. It is received the next day!

Letters Of Recommendation [Top of Page]

Three letters of recommendation should be submitted. The recommender can either forward the letter directly to our office or return it to you so that you can forward it to our office. To ensure confidentiality, please ask each recommender to seal the envelope and to sign his or her name across the seal before returning it to you. Click here to download Letter of Recommendation Form.

IMPORTANT: You can now have your recommenders send their letters of recommendation to us instantly which is the preferred way to submit them given our December 15th deadline. However, your recommenders will not be notified until two to three business days after you have paid the application fee. All of your recommenders will have the convenience of submitting their recommendations via return email. You initiate this process through the on-line Graduate Admissions Application via the Departmental Supplement. Through the on-line Departmental Supplement, applicants are required to include their recommenders' email addresses. Upon doing so, the automated system immediately contacts all of your recommenders via email and requests that they submit their recommendations via return email. As soon as your recommender submits the on-line recommendation, it is instantly downloaded and received in the department the next day! The automated system will re-contact your recommenders periodically until the recommendation is received, however, it remains each applicant's responsibility to follow-up with their recommenders to ascertain they they have indeed forwarded their recommendation letter to the department via return email by the December 15th deadline.

For the M.S. program, we recommend that you provide letters of reference from professors who have taught you in your junior or senior years.

For the Ph.D. program, we urge that all your letters be from academic references as recent as possible. If you have an M.S., letters from professors who served on your M.S. committee are particularly helpful. If you cannot obtain academic references, the letters should be from people who can comment on your recent professional attainments and your qualifications for graduate study in Biomedical Engineering at UCLA.

Confidentiality: Applicants are not permitted to inspect or retrieve letters of recommendation in their UCLA files. If you are admitted to UCLA and enroll, you will then have access to your letters of recommendations unless you have previously waived the right of access.

Graduate Record Examination [Top of Page]
http://www.gre.org/

GRE scores on the General (Aptitude) test are required for admission to both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. If necessary, GRE booklets can be obtained from any college or university bookstore. If you do not take the exam, your file will be considered incomplete. We cannot admit students "provisionally" and allow them to take the GRE exam after they are at UCLA.

The GRE must be taken within the last five years before the desired date of admission. The GRE code for UCLA is 1603.

If you have taken the GRE within the last five years, you may send a copy of the resuts pending receipt of official scores from the Educational Testing Service. The Department address to send the scores is located on the "When and How to Apply" page.

IELTS band score - International English Language Testing System
http://www.ielts.org/

Students whose native language is not English are required, for admission, to score at least 600 (paper exam), 250 (computer exam), or 100 iBT (Internet-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or have an overall band score of at least 8 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Applications may be obtained from ETS, Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151. IELTS is administered by local IELTS TEST CENTERS throughout the world and applicants should consult them for the nearest IELTS test center.

Because processing, sending, and receiving TOEFL and IELTS scores often takes several weeks, international students must schedule the TOEFL examination no later than October in order to meet the Departmental deadlines. TOEFL scores should be sent directly to the Department address. The Department address to send the scores is located on the "When and How to Apply" page.

In addition, students whose native language is not English must take the English as a Second Language Placement Examination (ESLPE) on arrival at UCLA and, beginning in their first term in residence, take any English as a Second Language courses needed as determined by the results of the ESLPE. Because such courses may not be applied toward the minimum course requirement, students who are required to take them should expect to spend additional time in residence.
